Saint Mary’s Church
St. Mary's Church, or Marienkirche, is located on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße near Alexanderplatz. It was built around the time of the Nikolaikirche, and is also one of the oldest churches in Berlin . Originally of the Roman Catholic denomination, today it has been converted to a Protestant house of worship after the Protestant Reformation. The area of Nikolaivierten is a beautiful, pedestrian area of the city, well worth visiting to see the older side of this modern city. During World War II the church was heavily damaged by bombing but was restored by the GDR in East Berlin . There is an imposing statue of Martin Luther outside the church
