Reichstag
Reichstag

Built in 1871 and finally opening for business in 1894, the Reichstag was intended to house the original parliament of the German Empire. Here the parliament was in function until 1933 when the Nazis came in power. Almost about the same time as the beginning of Nazi rule, the building was mysteriously burnt down meaning that during the 12 years of national socialism, the government was housed opposite the Reichstag in the Krolloper building, a former Opera house. Today's German parliament is called the Bundestag and is once again located in this edifice, restored after heavy bombing during WWII. Today, the term Reichstag refers to the building, while the term Bundestag refers to the government. In 1992, Norman Foster won the architectural contest to redesign the Reichstag, which today includes a giant glass dome. This dome is meant to represent the transparency of today’s government. Queues can be very long to enter the Reichstag, so make sure you get here early.
