Palast der Republik
Palast der Republik

The Palast der Republik, a former East German government building , is the site to see if you still can. Slated for demolition starting in February 2006, it should be fully torn down in 15 months, which at the time of writing, means there is probably little left to see. The Palast der Republiks' location overlooks the River Spree and served as the seat of the East German parliament, the Volkskammer, but it also housed two large auditoriums, art galleries, restaurants and a bowling alley. This monolith was constructed in a typical communist style. It was built on the site of the old Berliner Stadtschloss ( Berlin City Palace ), which was demolished by the GDR in 1950 as it was regarded as a symbol of Prussian imperialism. The plan of the current government is to reconstruct the Stadtschloss.
