Holocaust monument
Holocaust monument

This striking monument called Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe stands to remind visitors of the atrocities and victims of the Holocaust. Designed by Peter Eisenman, it consists of 2711 concrete slabs in a grid pattern, ranging in height (and some purposefully tilted), over an area of 19,000 m2. The highest slab is 4.8m, and the ground on which it is constructed is uneven, deepening in the middle. Once in the monument, visitors find themselves lost in an orderly sea devoid of humanity. No symbolism of any kind was used, making this memorial free to interpretation, and ensuring its impact is all the more profound. For a wider perspective on this period, visit the Information Centre which offers first person testimonies of the historical events surrounding the Holocaust. It is just south of the Brandenburg Gate just behind the Unter den Linden. Construction for this monument began in Spring 2003 and was completed at the end of 2004.
