Gendarmen Market

This beautiful plaza is flanked by the beautiful Konzerthaus (Concert House) and elegant the French and German Cathedrals. The centre of the Gendarmenmarkt is crowned by a statue of 's poet Friedrich Schiller. The French church was built for the Huguenot community which settled here in the early 1700s, artisans drawn to the city. The Gendarmenmarkt is named after the mounted cavalry regiment of the French Gendarmes, which was present at this square until 1773. This is the site of the yearly Christmas Market, a beautiful and festive market featuring crafts and cakes, hot mulled wine and art.
