Berlin's football stadium

The Olympic Stadium is the home ground of Hertha BSC, and was also the site of the 1936 Olympics. Founded in 1892 Hertha BSC is the most popular club in Berlin despite a history of ups and downs. In the 30’s they rose to greatness, reaching the German Cup final on four occasions and winning two. In the 1950’s the team's importance increased as the founding member of the Bundesliga and reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1979. The team hit an all-time low in the 80’s when they fell from the Bundesliga down to the second division and finally down into the Amateur Oberliga. Average attendances fell to a low of 1800 fans from a high in the 1970’s of over 40,000. Today, Hertha is back in the top league after a successful rally in 1993, and qualifying for the Champion’s league in 1998-9. With average attendances of 55,000, today Hertha looks forward to a promising future, hoping to relive the glories of the past. Some famous Hertha players of note: Hans Sobek (1930’s) and Erich Beer “The Berliner Beer” aka Ete (1980’s).
